When going door-to-door, I hear the comment: "My property taxes went up X dollars last year!" Taxpayers get very passionate about the amount of tax they pay, and rightly so. In a few weeks, we are coming up to an election for a new Board of Supervisors. It seems only fair to see how well the Republicans did the last time they were in control of Loudoun's budget and taxes. So, in the Algonkian District, we sampled two houses from each of the ten precincts--one larger house and one smaller house or a townhouse. A County website allows searches of yearly residential property tax by address, so we calculated the yearly tax increases for each of these properties during the four years of votes by the previous Republican BOS (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007) and during the four years of votes by the current Democratic BOS (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011). We found that for the Republican BOS, the median increase was $290, and for the Democratic BOS, the median increase was $136. We report, you decide:
The biggest reason that our real estate property taxes are among the highest in Virginia is because of the explosive, unbridled growth that occurred during the tenure of the 2004 to 2007 Republican dominated Board of Supervisors. During this time, my opponent, Suzanne Volpe, was the Planning Commissioner for then Supervisor Staton. As Planning Commissioner, Ms. Volpe voted to approve 14,242 houses. To put this number into perspective, there are 11,902 households in the Algonkian District. Houses, contrary to Republican talking points, cost the County more than the taxes homeowners pay. More houses equals higher real estate property taxes to pay for the needed infrastructure. The year, date, ZMAP, development name and number of houses for each of Ms. Volpe's approvals, obtained from County records, are listed below.
