Education Counts
I come from a family of teachers going back three generations to 1910. After attending public school and graduating from Radford College, I spent 10 years teaching art in middle school in rural Maryland. My school was built in 1923. It did not have air conditioning. There were no computers or copiers, just a mimeograph machine. During my 40-year career, it was the most important job I ever had. I’m retired now, and I want to contribute to the community again, this time as someone who will advocate for schools as your district supervisor.

A few voters I’ve met believe our schools are too luxurious. They don’t see the need for new classroom technology. They think teachers shouldn’t have the well-funded Virginia pension system they count on. Someone even told me she didn’t see why teachers use the copier so much—going back to using a mimeograph machine would be fine.

I find these ideas surprising. Let’s face it, things have changed since the ’70s, and they’re changing faster all the time. Our children need to be prepared for the technological world we live in now with the best teachers and schools appropriately equipped.

I will advocate for:
     • Full-day kindergarten and manageable class sizes for all grades
     • Competitive salaries with other Northern VA school districts
     • Reining in residential building to reduce the need for more schools
     • A better business base to keep real estate property taxes in check
     • Reducing the expense and time required to build new schools by decreasing the County’s burdensome review process
