Crime is Increasing in Loudoun?
On my opponent's website, she says she will ask for more resources to allow the Sheriff's office to crack down on the "increasing prevalence of violent crime." I fully support reviewing and updating the resources needed to improve Fire, Police and other parts of public safety in Loudoun County. However, as near as I can tell, the Sheriff's Office is doing a very good job. Despite my opponents erroneous claim, violent crime is not increasing in Loudoun County. This is just another area where my opponent imagines that life in Loudoun and the Algonkian District is so bad and that only she can fix our "area long neglected by County leadership."
Neglect? What neglect?
I don't see the neglect and I don't know where my opponent is getting her information, but each year the Virginia State Police publish a report titled "Crime in Virginia" at the website www.vsp.state.va.us. In each report over the past eleven years, I looked at the incidence of violent crime in Loudoun County. (Violent crime offenses include murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, aggravated assault, forcible sex offenses and robbery.) What I found was that for 2010, the number of incidents per 100000 population is only slightly higher that it was in 2004. The plot is below. There was an upward bump in 2008, but the rate of violent crime has been falling ever since. I plot the rate or number of incidents per 100000 population because that statistic gives a typical person an idea of their chance or risk of being a victim.
I don't credit Democrats for lower crime rates and I don't blame Republicans for higher crime rates. Many things cause crime rates to increase or decrease. However, let's just use facts rather than preconceived talking points.
The hard-working, underpaid, dedicated officers that make up the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office should be praised for the effectiveness of their efforts.

In the November 1, 2011, Ashburn Patch article , Ms. Volpe says another whopper when she says crime has increased 46% countywide in recent years. This is not true. Since 2008, violent crime in Loudoun County is down 30% and Group A Offenses are down 14%. Where does Ms. Volpe get her misleading information? Accurate information on crime in Loudoun County is published for each year by the Virginia State Police in a report titled "Crime in Virginia" at the website www.vsp.state.va.us .
